MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT & CEO

CHAD KLEPPE

Welcome to the 2023 Annual Report of the Master Builders of Iowa.  In this document, you will see how MBI was focused on advancing the commercial building industry here in Iowa through Advocacy; Education; and Resources. As an association, we reached new heights on membership, created greater engagement opportunities, expanded educational offerings, accommodated additional networking events, all while concentrating on adding additional returns to your membership investment. Please take a few minutes to review this Annual Report so that you can see how MBI continues to strive to be a tremendous resource for your company.

As we close the books on 2023, we look forward to what 2024 has to offer. From MBI’s perspective, this next year brings us into year two of our three-year strategic plan. If you recall, the strategic plan focuses on workforce development; being the go to resource on Iowa’s newest public procurement delivery option in Construction Manager at Risk; expanding the MBI brand with community and industry advocacy; and elevating our educational offerings.  These four areas of focus continuously shape how and what exclusive member services are made available to the entire membership base.

Our focus on workforce continues to be at the center of our efforts, be it from recruiting new people into the industry or creating a complement of retention services to keep your existing talent from looking elsewhere.  Workforce is continuously that one issue that is keeping many construction industry leaders on edge and solving it requires a broad approach focusing in many different areas. This is why MBI continues with traditional approaches like our career fairs and the utilization of our $5 million endowment called MBI-WORKS.  New additions to our workforce approach for 2024 will be increased career messaging via a public relations effort as well as a unique approach of expanding construction-focused curriculums in Iowa high schools.

On the CM@Risk front, MBI will continue to educate members, as well as design professionals and public owners on the nuances of this delivery model. It is important to MBI that when a public owner does look at the various delivery or procurement options available under Iowa laws, this decision is made with the best intentions in mind and aligns with procurement laws. MBI will continue to provide an array of resources as well as access to a highly respected consultant to help all facets of the industry with CM@Risk procurement.

Another area of focus for MBI is promoting the good deeds being done within this industry. Construction companies are such strong corporate citizens and MBI wants to provide members an opportunity to share these efforts. Through our newly developed program called MBI Cares, members can share their stories on how companies are making their communities a better place to live, work and play. MBI Cares creates a space that sheds light on such efforts and highlights the good being done by those in the construction industry.

The final step in the strategic plan looks to expand educational and training offerings that develop skill sets that are central to builders’ needs today and into the future. MBI will continue to offer essential programs in project management, field leader development, blueprint reading and an array of technical safety classes just to name a few. For 2024, MBI members will be able to take advantage of a number of MBI-LIVE trainings that are a no-charge, exclusive member benefit. First conducted in 2021, MBI will once again be holding its premier leadership program this summer, bringing together high-quality speakers who will deliver an impactful, results-driven program for MBI executives. Another new offering will be the Project Engineer Development Series, which will get your new project team members off on the right foot.

In closing, the MBI Board and staff are committed to working to find ways to enhance member engagement and increase the return on your membership investment. We are so appreciative of your continued support of MBI and look forward to finding new and improved ways to assist your company through advocacy, education and resources. MBI’s core values reflect our continued work to be engaged professionals in service to others and drives us daily to earn your continued involvement with MBI.

On behalf of all of us at MBI, we thank you for your membership.
